Banksia – Mental Health Ward
Banksia Ward is a dynamic 16-bed inpatient unit dedicated to supporting young people aged 13 to 18 years who are experiencing a range of acute mental health challenges
At Banksia, you’ll be part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team that includes consultant psychiatrists, mental health nurses, psychologists, and family peer support workers, and teachers with special education expertise. Together, we use a holistic approach to help young people regain stability, build resilience, and return to their communities with confidence.

The Opportunity:
Within the Banksia Ward education team, you’ll play a key role in leading, inspiring, and developing our nursing team.
With your advanced clinical expertise and passion for education you will role model and promote excellence in mental health nursing practice, fostering a culture of curiosity, collaboration, and continuous learning.
You will lead an innovative transition program, supporting up to three Registered Nurses as they make the transition from general or paediatric nursing to Mental Health Nursing. You’ll have the unique opportunity to shape the program and influence how our future mental health nurses grow and thrive.
In addition, you’ll provide ongoing guidance to strengthen and sustain emerging programs within Banksia.

Through your commitment to improving the lives of young people and their families every day, you will deliver high quality care to those most in need by uplifting the skills and knowledge of the workforce.
You will achieve this by:
- Contributing to a new Transition to Mental Health Program, and playing a pivotal role in shaping its delivery
- Working alongside new and existing staff to strengthen the delivery of excellent psychiatric nursing care
- Developing and implementing high quality reflective groups and individual clinical supervision for Banksia nursing staff
- Contributing to research opportunities by evaluating and report on the effectiveness of nursing workforce education and training programs
What You’ll Bring to the Role:
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills – both written and verbal – with the ability to adapt your approach, build rapport, and foster a psychologically safe and supportive environment
- Experience in clinical education, with a demonstrated ability to support, mentor, and develop the knowledge and skills of nursing staff.
- Understanding of adult learning principles and a passion for developing others through education and training.
- The ability to mentor and support staff and students in their clinical learning.
- Proficiency in digital literacy, including strong computer skills and experience using learning management systems.
- Experience in acute adolescent mental health is highly regarded
The Logistical Essentials:
- Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) administered though the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (APHRA)
- Postgraduate qualification in Mental Health Nursing, or completion of a specialist undergraduate Mental Health Nursing program.
- Current Victorian Working With Children’s Check (WWCC) and the ability to provide Criminal History Check
