About the Role:

 

This is a Full-Time position within the Department of Cardiac Surgery at the Royal Children’s Hospital.

 

You will perform the whole range of paediatric cardiac surgery procedures as primary operator, participate in ward and intensive care management of our patients and be responsible for the collection of clinical data.  Significant involvement in training of registrars/clinical fellows, research and management of subspecialty is expected. The role also includes management of adult cardiac surgery patients with primary congenital cardiac conditions through regular engagement at partner sites in line with relevant service agreements.

 

You will be technically competent in the skills of neonatal and infant paediatric cardiac surgery.  Several years of experience as primary operator in paediatric cardiac surgery is required as well as training and experience adult congenital cardiac surgery. 

 

Experience in paediatric cardiac transplantation and ventricular assist device is desirable and leadership / management experience would be valuable.

  • Building and maintaining collaborative relationships with relevant stakeholders, including surgical and medical cardiac and transplant teams across ANZ and internationally.
  • Ethical decision making to assist in the achievements of organisational goals, comply with and utilise procedures, policies, regulations & standards of the Royal Children’s Hospital. 
  • Training and supervision of cardiac surgery registrars and Fellows

 

Your skills and experience:

 

  • The Candidate must be technically expert in the skills of neonatal and infant paediatric cardiac surgery. Several years of experience as first operator in paediatric cardiac surgery is required as well as training/experience in adult cardiac surgery, especially for congenital cardiac conditions.
  • The Candidate will participate in clinical research or clinical trial.
  • The Candidate will demonstrate ethical decision making in achievements of organisational goals.  Comply with and utilize procedures, policies, regulations & standards of the Royal Children’s Hospital.
  • The Candidate will be required to participate in the Cardiac Surgery weekly review and planning meeting, Combined Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery Conference, monthly Mortality & Morbidity Meeting, ICU daily access meeting, ECHO weekly meeting, research meetings, weekly grand rounds and daily ward rounds.

About The Cardiac Surgery Department:

 

The Cardiac Surgery Department at the RCH is the sole provider of care for paediatric cardiac surgery for Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Northern Territory.  The Cardiac Surgery Department performs over five hundred and thirty open heart surgeries a year. It holds the Nationally Funded Centre for paediatric cardiac transplantation and this includes a large program for LVAD and ECMO.  

 

As one of the leading paediatric cardiac surgery programs in the world, our care relies on and includes clinical and technical excellence, innovation, clinical and experimental research and teaching of younger generations of surgeons.  In partnership with the Royal Melbourne Hospital, it treats patients with congenital heart disease beyond their transition to adult care.

Other requirements:

 

  • The successful candidate must currently hold a consultant position in a paediatric cardiac surgery unit and hold a FRACS Membership or equivalent college recognised qualification.
  • Current National Criminal Record Check, or willing to obtain
  • Valid Working with Children Check
  • Compliance with RCHs “Staff Immunisation - Prevention of Vaccine Preventable Diseases” procedure
