About the Role

This is a fixed term (until June 30 2026) Part Time position at up to 45.6 hours per fortnight within the HOPE team within the Mental Health Department.

The Senior Family Intervention Clinician/Family Intervention Clinician will provide time limited, evidence-informed interventions to assist parents, and carers to learn strategies to help their children manage their mood and affect regulation difficulties, deliberate self-harm and suicidal feelings, as well as build distress tolerance and problem-solving skills. The role will involve providing family based or dyadic sessions with the child and parent or carer. The position will also involve the co-facilitation of parent and/or child groups. The successful applicant will work alongside other members of the HOPE program including the Program Clinical Lead, the Lived Experience Peer worker, and the Psychosocial Support Worker to best support families.  

Classification for this position would depend on the applicants discipline, qualifications and experience, and will range from:

  • Senior Family Intervention Clinician - Grade 3 Occupational Therapist (YB24-YB27), Psychologist (PL1-PL4), Social Worker (YC46-YC49) or Speech Pathologist (YB51-YB54) or Grade 4 Registered Psychiatric Nurse (NP75-NP77)
  • or, Family Intervention Clinician - Grade 2 Occupational Therapist (YB20-YB23), Psychologist (PK1-PK4), Social Worker (YC42-YC45), Speech Pathologist (YB47-YB50) or Grade 3 Registered Psychiatric Nurse (NP81-NP74) 

What you’ll achieve:

  • The provision of time limited evidence-based family interventions to reduce the risk of suicide and self-harm including interventions such as Attachment Based Family Therapy, CBT, ACT and/or DBT based parent management training, aspects of Circle of Security parenting interventions or behaviour support informed interventions.
  • High quality assessments and time limited interventions through telehealth, outreach (i.e., to school, home) and/or in clinic to best meet the needs of individual families. 
  • The provision leadership through modelling a high standard of professional and interpersonal skills, attitudes and behaviours.

Your skills and experience

Essential

  • Tertiary Qualification or equivalent in relevant discipline
  • Current Registration as an Occupational Therapist, Psychologist or Registered Nurse with the applicable Health Practitioner Board or a qualified Social Worker or Speech Pathologist
  • Proven capacity for leadership in a team environment and ability to work well as a senior team member
  • Experience in providing quality clinical/professional supervision to staff and students
  • Depending on discipline, required years of experience in accordance with the EBA will apply

About the Department

The RCH’s Infant, Child and Family Area Mental Health and Wellbeing Service (RCH Mental Health) Child Hospital Outreach Post-suicidal Engagement (C&Y HOPE) program is a new program which will provide tailored holistic support to children ages 5 to 11 years old who are experiencing deliberate self-harm, suicidal thoughts and attempts who reside within the North and West Metropolitan Area of Melbourne, as well as their families/ care systems. The program aims to provide psychosocial and clinical support to children, young people and their families/carers for up to 3 months to address factors that may have contributed to the child/young person presenting with deliberate self-harm and/or suicidal thoughts and attempts. The program would initially work closely and form partnerships with the RCH emergency department, the many departments and teams within RCH Mental Health as well as external mental health care providers.
