About the Role:

 

This is a Fixed Term Full Time position (80 hours per fortnight) within the Department of Endocrinology & Diabetes, Diabetes Allied Health Team, established as part of Project Pump — a 12‑month service development innovation initiative.

 

This is a senior nursing leadership role that will work in close partnership with the project Endocrinologist and Head of Department to lead the design, implementation and evaluation of a structured insulin pump therapy model of care. The role has accountability for driving change in clinical practice to significantly increase insulin pump uptake among children and young people with type 1 diabetes attending the RCH Diabetes Clinic.

The Nurse Practitioner or Nurse Practitioner Candidate will provide advanced clinical leadership, overseeing a coordinated insulin pump initiation and early follow‑up pathway that is safe, equitable, and scalable. This includes liaising with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders to ensure integrated service delivery, supporting innovative and hybrid models of care that enhance access, efficiency and patient experience.

This role will lead nursing‑driven service redesign, influence multidisciplinary practice, and contribute to improved clinical, safety and experience outcomes for children and families.

 

Classification for this position will range from NO1 - NO2 /  ZJ4 (FTE base salary $149,260.80 - $152,094.80 per annum, plus superannuation). Applications from Nurse Practitioner Candidates will be considered.

 

What you’ll achieve:

In this leadership role you will:

  • Provide advanced nursing leadership and clinical expertise in the assessment, initiation and management of insulin pump therapy for children and young people with type 1 diabetes
  • Lead the implementation of innovative, evidence‑based models of care that increase access to insulin pump therapy and align with international best practice
  • Translate and integrate evidence‑based knowledge into clinical decision making, service planning and workforce practice
  • Coordinate and manage episodes of care across the insulin pump initiation pathway, ensuring strong clinical governance and continuity of care
  • Build and sustain collaborative, culturally safe and respectful relationships with children, young people and families, placing them at the centre of care
  • Engage and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and key internal and external stakeholders to support integrated service delivery
  • Contribute to research, evaluation, education and quality improvement activities aligned to Project Pump objectives and key performance indicators
  • Act as a nursing practice leader and role model, supporting capability development and change within the diabetes nursing and allied health workforce

 

 

 

Your skills and experience:

You will have:

  • Current endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), or demonstrated eligibility and progression towards endorsement
  • Completion of a Master of Nurse Practitioner, or a Master’s degree recognised by AHPRA plus an approved Therapeutic Medication Management unit (or working towards)
  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), administered through AHPRA
  • Credentialled Diabetes Nurse Educator (CDE) status with the Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA)
  • Significant advanced clinical experience in paediatric diabetes care, including a minimum of two years’ experience supporting children and families to commence insulin pump therapy
  • Demonstrated experience in nursing leadership, service development or implementation of new models of care within a complex healthcare environment
  • Highly developed communication, negotiation and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work autonomously within a medically governed framework
  • Experience contributing to quality improvement, research or evaluation activities (desirable)

About the Department:

The Department of Endocrinology and Diabetes at the RCH cares for over 1100 children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes from metropolitan Melbourne and a further 200 children from regional Victoria with 2-5 new patients diagnosed per week. The RCH diabetes service, including the Diabetes Allied Health Team is involved in active primary care, education, family support, research and advocacy for children and adolescents with living with diabetes.
